Witnesses sought after fatal crash – Duri, near Tamworth

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a fatal crash in the state’s north.

About 3.30pm today (Monday 11 April 2016), a Hyundai Elantra was travelling north on Werris Creek Road, Duri, towards Tamworth, when it collided head on with a Hyundai i30 travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the i30, a 76-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. His passenger, a 77-year-old woman, was taken to Tamworth Hospital suffering a possible broken eye socket and a broken arm.

The 32-year-old driver of the Elantra was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he is suffering serious internal injuries. He is in a critical condition.

Police from Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and conducted inquiries. The road was closed for about five and a half hours as investigations took place.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

In particular, they are asking for a man who was travelling behind the Elantra, and claimed to have witnessed the lead-up to the crash, as well as the crash itself, to come forward and tell police what he saw.

The man left the scene before police arrived and his details were not obtained.
