Registrations open for Beach Soccer Tournament between police and international students

Registrations are now open for the upcoming round-robin Beach Soccer Tournament set to take place between police and international students next month.

To take part, students must register online ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted by the Eastern Beaches Local Area Command at Coogee Beach from 8.30am, on Sunday 27 September 2015.

Major Sponsors include Study NSW, Department of Premier & Cabinet, and Randwick City Council, and the event is also supported by Multicultural NSW.

The tournament will see police and international students celebrate multiculturalism in Australia while enjoying the world game.

Students from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, the Philippines, India, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, who are studying at schools, TAFE colleges, English language colleges, universities and other educational institutions in NSW, will represent their country during the competition.

The tournament will also feature police from Local Area Commands across Sydney, as well as the Hunter and Illawarra, building on relationships with students from their local educational institutions.

The community are welcome to come and join in the fun; the event is free and there will be a number of cultural and police displays, as well as a selection of international food stalls and live entertainment.

A major trophy will also be awarded to the country with the loudest and proudest supporter base on the day.

Corporate Sponsor for the Safety of International Students, Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate said the event, now in its third year at Coogee, is growing in popularity each year.

“The event is really about celebrating diversity, with students representing at least 15 countries from Asia, South America, and for the first time Europe and the Middle East, coming together for this year’s competition,” Det Supt Dengate said.

“Soccer, the world game, is a terrific way to celebrate different cultures while promoting social awareness and inclusion.

“The tournament also offers a great opportunity for police to interact with students, help them feel welcome in their new community and work toward stronger relationships of support and trust,” Det Supt Dengate said.

“I encourage any international students who wish to participate in the event to register online – it promises to be an exciting day.”

Registrations for student players close on Monday 14 September 2015, which can be made by emailing intstudent@police.nsw.gov.au.

Students are asked to provide their name, their educational institution and country of origin, when registering for the competition.
