Two to face court after handbag stolen and fraudulent activity – Newcastle

Two men will face court, after allegedly stealing a handbag yesterday and using cards to fraudulently purchase items.

About 12.30pm yesterday (Thursday 20 August 2015), a 29-year-old woman had her handbag stolen from a hotel on Darby Street, Cooks Hill.

She reported the matter to police and an investigation commenced.

About 3.50pm the same day, following investigations, police attended a home on Nickson Street, Bar Beach, and arrested a 37-year-old man following a short foot pursuit.

During a search of the man, police allegedly located a credit card belonging to the 29-year-old woman in his possession.

Police also allegedly located a backpack at the home containing a number of personal items belonging to the 29-year-old woman, and other items allegedly purchased fraudulently with her credit card(s).

The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station and was charged with stealing and nine counts of fraud.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 21 August 2015).

Following his arrest, a 46-year-old Bar Beach man attended Newcastle Police Station about 6pm yesterday.

He was arrested and charged with stealing and nine fraud offences. He was granted conditional bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday 17 September 2015.
