19 people test positive to drugs during roadside operation – Albury

Police from Albury Local Area Command had 19 people test positive to drugs during a weekend random Roadside Drug Testing (RDT) operation.

Officers from Albury Traffic and Highway Command and Albury LAC conducted the operation using a mobile drug bus in Albury and Corowa townships on Friday and Saturday evening (14 and 15 August 2015).

Over the two day operation police conducted a total of 116 mobile breath tests and 107 random drug tests.

19 drivers returned a positive secondary drug test and were issued 24 hour driving prohibition notices. Two drivers returned a negative secondary sample and were released.

Further action may be undertaken against driver’s following the analysis results.

Inspector Russell of Albury Local Area Command, said police are very concerned by the large number of drivers testing positive to drugs.

“Officers remind motorists that driving under the influence of prohibited drugs is not only illegal, it is immeasurably irresponsible and dangerous.

“The message is very clear – driving under the influence of drugs can be deadly.

“Drug testing operations will continue and police will go on targeting drivers under the influence to try and avoid any further loss of life on our roads,” said Inspector Russell.
