An investigation is underway after a man was shot in the leg near Newcastle this morning.

Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command were called to Platt Street at Waratah shortly before 6am (Sunday 12 July 2015), responding to reports that a man was injured.

They arrived to find the man with a gunshot wound to his right knee.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.

A crime scene was established in Platt Street and police are now appealing for anyone in the area at the time – and who may have information about the incident or people or a vehicle leaving – to contact Newcastle Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
