Man arrested after assaulting 80-year-old man and police – Tamworth

A man will appear in court over alleged offences including robbery, malicious damage and assault police, after he was arrested in Tamworth today.

About 2.40am (Saturday 31 January 2015), an 80-year-old man was driving along Denison Street, when he stopped his vehicle due to a man lying on the road.

Police have been told the man on the road approached the driver, before allegedly assaulting him and fleeing the scene with a mobile phone.

The injured man drove to Tamworth Police Station and reported the incident. He suffered facial bleeding and minor arm injuries.

Officers attached to Oxley Local Area Command commenced investigations and following inquiries, arrested a 21-year-old man at the back of a house on Denison Street.

Police will allege prior to the arrest, the man threw a chair through a window of the home, was involved in a struggle with police officers, and threw a container of chlorine at police.

Following his arrest, the man was taken to Tamworth Police Station, where he was charged with robbery, malicious damage, assault police and resist arrest.

He was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Tamworth Local Court on 16 February 2015.
