Motocross issue in Gunning

Motocross proponent Shannon McCluskey made a presentation to concerned district people last week. He stressed that he and his partner Ebony were just a young couple with a passion for Motocross that they assert is a family sport and were chasing a dream. They are not big developers. Many objectors to their Development Application believe the facility would be a nightmare.

Two telling points raised from the floor were the objectives in the Local Environment Plan for RU2 (rural landscape) and the experience of a Goulburn couple who reside two kilometres from the Wakefield Park Raceway.

The objectives for RU2 are clearly for rural activities and the Motocross proposal clearly does not fall within the stated objectives. The Wakefield Park facility started in 1994 with very modest usage but is now a seven-day-a-week facility with long hours, the noise from which rattles the windows two kilometres away and has devalued adjacent land. This is the sort of development creep that the Lade Vale Road facility could experience.

Substantial damage

There was no lessening in opposition to the proposal with the following motion passed 65 to 8. “The meeting asks the Upper Lachlan Shire Council to reject DA 84/2014 because the proposed development would cause substantial damage to the rural character and the amenity of the neighbourhood in which this development is proposed.”

The meeting further agreed that a copy of this motion be forwarded to Council. It was noted that Council’s Planning Department had recommended that the original DA be refused. The deadline for objections is Thursday April 23.

The historic truck event known as Haulin’ the Hume was on last weekend with nearly 300 trucks of all sizes and some Clipper buses winding their way along the Old Hume Highway and through the village of Gunning.

Some keen trucking tragics had staked out terrific viewing vantage points along the Cullerin like the Muscat gang. Tony Muscat of Muscat Haulage in Yass had the extended family in tow while his brother Charlie was along from Binalong.

People were lined up on the main street of Gunning to welcome the convoy. The truckies responded enthusiastically by revving their engines and giving their klaxons a bit of a workout! Donations were collected in Gunning and along the Haulin’ the Hume route for the Autism Spectrum organisation.

Newcastle police to put the skids on car “hoons”

Newcastle Police and Traffic and Highway Command warn deregistration and vehicle confiscation are among a range of legislative tools they intend to use during an upcoming blitz on “hoon” behaviour in Newcastle.

Newcastle Local Area Command says it’s fed up with the dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour exhibited by a hooligan element congregating in the Newcastle area.

In response, police are about to launch a crackdown against illegal drag racers and drivers performing ‘burn-outs’.

Newcastle Police remain supportive of genuine car enthusiasts but warn they will target drivers who engage in dangerous or unlawful activity.

The operation will take a different form than past compliance initiatives with police targeting not only those driving dangerously but spectators engaging in trespass, underage drinking, offensive behaviour, traffic obstruction and public order offences.

Newcastle Commander, John Gralton, said the “hoons” were risking their lives and those around them by racing in dangerous and unlawful conditions.

“Some of this behaviour may have been going on for decades, but we are serious about catching those who drive in a dangerous or potentially deadly manner,” Supt Gralton said.

“Ignore this warning at your peril. There will be consequences to your actions when you are caught.

“The Traffic & Highway Patrol Command, together with local police, will work together with Roads and Maritime Services and will consider the confiscation of vehicles and any necessary action for people that repeatedly break the road rules.

“We will be using evidence from social media and available CCTV to prosecute these matters.

“The illegal activity is attracting participants from Sydney, the Central Coast and across the Hunter. We have information about who is organising this illegal activity and we will be gathering evidence to prosecute them,” Supt Gralton said.

“You won’t know when or where we’ll turn up but car hoons – you’re on notice.”

New Goulburn-based supercharger facility to be up and running by mid-year.

Tesla says its Australian owners will soon be able to travel between Sydney and Canberra on free electricity after confirming a new supercharger station at Goulburn in New South Wales.

The electric car maker has also re-affirmed its desire to link the main thoroughfare between Brisbane and Melbourne with supercharger stations by 2016 as part of its broader Australian strategy.

Speaking with Drive, Tesla Australia spokesman Heath Walker said the Goulburn recharging station was due for completion in June and would feature eight separate recharging bays. The new facility will be based in Goulburn’s main centre, bringing potential tourism benefits for the NSW town.

“It’s self-serve, basically,” Walker said. “The car does a handshake with the supercharger, so they can talk to each other.

“You get free charge, so within 20 minutes you’ll have a half charge and within an hour you’ll have a full charge.”

The Goulburn supercharger is based next door to the town’s tourism centre and will be open at anytime.

Tesla is now on the lookout for more potential townships along the busy Hume corridor, flagging another site near Albury-Wodonga. The by-product is an unlikely tourism boost for such centres.

“There could be occasions where we go into town, there could be occasions where we stay on the Hume,” Walker said.

“It’s great because it will get Tesla owners going back into these towns and exploring Australian townships, it’s a good opportunity.”

Goulburn has been bypassed by the Hume Highway since 1992. Nowadays, many motorists that stop at Goulburn only visit a service centre and fast food restaurant located on the fringe of the town.

“[The bypass] did affect the city initially, but we’re glad we don’t have the highway through town anymore. We’re very happy with the way it is,” Goulburn mayor Geoff Kettle said.

“We had discussions with Tesla earlier in the year. They came and had a look at the city and identified a spot that would suit them for a re-charging station. We’re very, very happy to be part of the charging network.”

While Goulburn doesn’t miss the endless parade of trucks grunting down its main street, Cr Kettle welcomed the potential trickle in tourism from the Tesla site.

“It means people can come into the city and enjoy what’s on offer, rather than a hurried stop,” he said. “It’s a welcome reprieve from what I call the three Ps of typical highway travelling: a piss, a pie and some petrol.”
