At WAGGA WAGGA CIVIC THEATRE White Box Theatre presents UNHOLY GHOSTS Wednesday 1st October at 7.30pm

Written by Campion Decent Directed by Kim Hardwick

Cast Robert Alexander, James Lugton, Anna Volska.

A successful man of the theatre finds a front row seat in a strange new tragicomedy: the undignified death of his parents. There’s not much time left for either his ailing mother the actress, still prone to meladramatics, or his father the salesman, still flogging his side of the story. But there’s just enough time to open old wounds and have a jolly good go at new ones.

At once personal and universal, Unholy Ghosts invites us to reflect on the narrative turning point that visits all our life stories. It’s an irreverent, life-affirming take on loss with all the inherent funniness of a good funeral.

A family portrait painted in warm, uplifting colours, Unholy Ghosts won Campion Decent the 2012 Rodney Seaborn Playwright’s Award and is directed by Kim Hardwick.

What the Reviewers said:
‘Curiously little art about the art of dying exists, and yet we must all blunder our way with more or less grace through the deaths of others and, ultimately, our own. Campion Decent has tried to redress this shortfall with an amusing, autobiographical play about the deaths of his divorced parents.’ John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald read more

‘For a play about death, Unholy Ghosts is frequently, genuinely funny. With a dying mother who is a faded star of “stage and radio”, there are plenty of “darlings” and various dramatics that can only, even within the throes of tragedy, be ridiculous; add to that a dying realist salesman father possessed of deep pragmatism, resignation and impatience, and the jokes evolve quickly and naturally out of dialogue. In this way the play manages to feel honest and certainly relatable; the human creases of personality that infiltrate the impossibly sad ritual of dying and family loss mean that laughs are still going to happen, and possibly at the worst possible moments. It’s how we keep living.

As the mother who wears lipstick even for the priest who is coming to administer her last rites Anna Volska is a hoot, a gand dame with long limbs and a beautiful, likable habit of reciting Shakespeare – everyone loved her Ophelia. Robert Alexander as the gruff father is delightfully cantankerous, and for carrying the entire play, for talking to us and his parents and for feeling the fresh pain of death night upon night James Lugton is excellent, this likable everyman.’ Cassie Tongue, AussieTheatre.com read more

‘Decent writes with enough specificity to make these characters startlingly real, but he’s also telling a broader story about relationships between parents and children and the role death plays in our lives. As the son says at the end of the play – our parents teach us how to live and how not to live. But they also teach us how to die.

There are fine performances from James Lugton as the son and Anna Volska as the mother. Lugton brings vivacity and resilience to his performance, as well as the damage that resulted from his tumultuous childhood. He’s also the audience’s guide to the family, narrating his way through, providing us with the back-story and his own perceptions. Volska presents is a powerful portrayal of a woman struggling to maintain her dignity and former glory, and is in fine comedic form.’ Ben Neutze, Daily Review – Crikey.com read more
‘Directed by Kim Hardwick, Unholy Ghosts is not forced nor overplayed, but finds a grace and humanity in its theatrical origins and forebears, in its allusions and unique voice. An emotional knife in the heart, it takes us to the edge of the abyss, dares us to stare it in the face, and then to journey back from it, stronger and wiser. It gets under your skin, affects you without you realising it, until you’re sobbing in the dark and trying to breathe, laughing amongst (and despite) the tears streaming freely down your face. Proving once again that, amongst death, we can only find Life.’ Glenn Saunders, The Spell of Waking Hours blogspot read more

Newcastle: community members and local Ausgrid workers concerned by impact of electricity network sale

Stop the Sell Off campaigners are in Newcastle today (Thursday) to discuss the impacts of Premier Mike Baird’s electricity privatisation plan, which will see the sale of Ausgrid and TransGrid, the publicly-owned poles and wires companies that delivers electricity in the Hunter.

Members of the campaign are meeting with local workers and concerned residents who fear job losses, service reductions and price rises if Premier Mike Baird presses ahead with privatisation.

Stop the Sell Off campaign director Adam Kerslake, said potential job losses would be devastating for the region, with Ausgrid employing more than 1,300 people in the Hunter while TransGrid has 160 staff in Newcastle.

Mr Kerslake said voters in Charlestown and Newcastle, who will next month vote in byelections following the resignations of local Liberal MPs during an Independent Commission Against Corruption investigation, had a unique opportunity to express their opposition to the sale.

“Premier Mike Baird is willing to leave future generations poorer by selling off the State’s largest income generating asset, all to build a war-chest to fund election promises,” he said.

“Every state that has sold their electricity poles and wires has seen higher prices for consumers, poorer service standards, and cuts to jobs – especially in regional areas.

“The experience in Victoria following privatisation was massive job losses due to the new private owners cutting back on major investment and maintenance.

“If the Baird Government are re-elected in March 2015 they will condemn the Hunter community to local job losses and a higher electricity prices.”

Mr Kerslake said that while the Premier publicly committed to taking electricity privatisation to the March 2015 election, he had already locked in lucrative contracts worth millions of dollars with investment banks, lawyers, and accountancy firms to start the sale process.

“Our electricity network – made up of Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy and TransGrid – is the state’s most valuable income generating asset,” he said.

“The profits from these four companies currently deliver billions of dollars every year to help pay for schools, hospitals and transport – income that will be lost forever following privatisation.

“Under Premier Baird’s plan, the people of Charlestown, Newcastle, and the rest of the Hunter region will be left paying higher electricity bills as private owners cut back on spending and increase prices to maximise returns for shareholders.

“Price regulations and job protections may provide temporary measure to get the Liberal Party past the next election, but once they expire we will see a repeat of the experiences of South Australia – which has the highest power bills in the country – and Victoria – where poor maintenance by the private owner sparked several of the deadly Black Saturday bushfires.

“I challenge anyone to provide an example of anywhere privatisation has led to lower prices.

“The NSW Government needs to cut back on the political spin and be truthful with the people of NSW that the privatisation of the poles and wires will not be a good thing for power consumers.

“This is a short sighted policy that will deliver a one off budget sugar hit while leaving electricity consumers worse off in the long run.

“The only way to ensure the people of NSW will have reliable, affordable and well-maintained electricity services in the decades ahead is to ensure this essential service is owned by the public and operated by the government to benefit all NSW residents.”

“The general public need to understand that a vote for the Liberal Party is a vote for electricity privatisation.”

City Recital Hall BORODIN QUARTET MUSICA VIVA

Monday 29 September, 7pm Saturday 11 October, 2pm

Musica Viva presents the Borodin Quartet

The legendary Borodin Quartet is living history. The printed music used by the group bears markings in Shostakovich’s own hand. Just as importantly, the Quartet’s unwritten traditions carry a unique impact that makes every concert glow with the authenticity of experience and knowledge.

Approaching their 70th concert season, the Borodins return to Australia with music of great depth and emotional resonance. Shostakovich, of course: his powerful Quartet no 8 and its dark sister, no 11, contrast sharply with the Classical beauty of cornerstone repertoire from Beethoven. These lend balance to the evocative drama of Schubert’s great ‘Death and the Maiden’, and to the emotive Russian sensibility that underpins every work by Tchaikovsky.

“Impressive was the seamlessness with which the four players shared musical ideas… Most remarkable was the oneness and the inner fire of each interpretation”

Waggafest Celebrates Winter!

Wagga Waggafest is a short film competition encouraging the community and visitors alike to share their unique Wagga Wagga stories using the medium of film.

This year, the Waggafest theme is Wagga in Winter. It’s a celebration of some of the things we love about winter: the bracing cold and the snuggly warmth, the roar of winter sports, campfires under clear skies and the beauty of fog and frost. For some of us, there are things to loathe about winter, too: scraping ice from our car windscreens in the morning, cleaning muddy bootprints out of the carpet and conjuring the motivation to emerge from under the doona for our morning run.
