Police appeal for Wagga Schools to contribute to upcoming commemorative exhibition

Wagga Wagga Police invite local schools and any other ‘budding’ artists to submit their art works for an upcoming exhibition to help raise funds for local Project Bowen, which commemorates the death of a police officer who was killed on duty in the 1800s.

Project Bowen began in 2013, and was established to memorialise the death of Senior Constable Edward Bowen, who was tragically shot by bushrangers in 1879 in the township of Wantabadgery. While his killer, Captain Moonlight (also known as George Scott), is well known in history pages, Senior Constable Bowen’s sacrifice has largely been forgotten over time.

Wagga Wagga Local Area Command has a limited number of canvasses they can provide for free to schools with a passion for history, art and doing the right thing – not the wrong thing with excuses which is theme of the exhibition. Interested schools can book in for a 45 minute presentation on the Hero of Wantabadgery’s exploits by police to get their imaginations flowing by Contacting Inspector Stephen RADFORD at Wagga Wagga Police Station on 69222599.

Participating schools art works will be displayed at the Wagga Art Gallery between Friday 3 October 2014 to Sunday 12 October 2014 and awards will be presented in various categories. Entries need to be submitted to Wagga Wagga Police Station by 19 September 2014.

Inspector Stephen Radford, said “The school talks conducted have been received well and have included a ‘Hero of Wantabadgery’ historical comic strip and examples of other exciting art works completed to date. We have a number of canvasses left and are encouraging interested schools and talented individuals to contact police if they want to participate in a worthwhile project”.

People wishing to contribute to the fund raising project in a non artistic way can “Buy a Brick for Bowen – and become a foundation of history”. Pavers that will support the monument can be purchased from Wagga Police. Individuals can have their names engraved on these showing their support for Project BOWEN for as little as $40.

Child Attack Near Wagga

Police are appealing for information after two girls were approached by a man near Wagga Wagga this morning.

About 10.30am (Sunday 24 August 2014), two girls, aged eight and 11, were at a playground on the intersection of Protea Place and Mangrove Crescent, Forest Hill.

Police have been told a dark-coloured, dual-cab utility containing four men and a child stopped near the park.

One of the men reportedly got out of the car and approached the girls, attempting to grab the younger one. Police believe she may have been on the roadway.

When the girls ran away, the man got back into the vehicle before it drove away.

The girls reported the incident to their parents, who in turn contacted police.

Detectives from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command would now like to speak with a man who may be able to assist with inquiries.

The man has been described as being aged in his late teens or early 20s, with brown hair. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt.

Marking the final stage of a four-year cycle based on the elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire, The Song Company celebrates the heat and passion of Fire and the music that expresses it. In his first collaboration with The Song Company, Danish Guest Director and composer Bo Holten leads a fiery program of neck-breaking speeds, hair-raising leaps and awe-inspiring harmonies.

The program includes 16th century madrigals by Marenzio, Morley, Wilbye, Flecha, and Gesualdo, as well as more contemporary pieces from Raffaele Marcellino, Berio, and Bo Holten himself.

The Song Company

The Song Company is Australia’s leading vocal ensemble, proud to celebrate 30 years of music making. Since its formation in 1984, it has provided audiences with international standard performances in the field of vocal chamber music. The group’s repertoire covers vocal music from the 10th century to the present day and is unique in its stylistic diversity.

Over 30 years, the ensemble’s schedule has grown to include a mix of national and international tours, a subscription series across Australia, recording projects, education activities, and special artistic collaborations.

Bo Holten
Danish composer and conductor, Bo Holten established his reputation as a conductor of early music vocal groups and has conducted a wide range of ensembles and choirs in Scandinavia and abroad. He has conducted all eight Danish professional Symphony Orchestras, performing and recording both his own and other composers’ works.

In his own work, Bo Holten’s music builds a bridge between old and new. He has written 120 works including symphonies, solo concertos, works for chorus and orchestra, operas, and musicals. Holten’s fourth opera, Operation Orfeo, is the most frequently performed Danish opera, having been performed twice here in Sydney at the Sydney Opera House.

In a dramatic collaboration with Bell Shakespeare, the Australian Chamber Orchestra performs Janáček’s Intimate Letters and Smetana’s From My Life, sharing the stage with esteemed actors and led by London Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Gordan Nikolic.

Inspired by more than 700 passionate letters written between Janáček and his much younger, married muse, Intimate Letters explores their overwhelming and obsessive love.

Smetana’s autobiographical From My Life soars with the joy and hope of childhood which gradually derails and ultimately descends into despair, as the composer faces the inescapable fate of impending deafness.

Radio 16 Live Broadcast of the Dubbo Jazz Festival

This year again we’ll be at the Dubbo Jazz festival on the 15th, 16th and 17th of August 1004829broadcasting live from the many venues that make up the festival this year.

Continuing in the footsteps of their proud history, while keeping a focus on Trad Jazz, the Dubbo Jazz Festival will be expanding the Jazz genres to include some blues, swing, funk and soul. The Festival will present ‘jazz around town’ highlighted locations will include Dundullimal Homestead and Red Earth Estate.

Please note change of location this year – West Dubbo Bowling Club at 82 Whylandra Street, Dubbo. Main stage – ‘Dubbo Basement Jazz Club’ all weekend including Gospel Service at St Andrews Chapel, Wingewarra Street, Dubbo – Sunday morning 10:30am.

Bruce Cockburn plays rare FREE show during Markham Jazz Festival Friday August 15th

On August 15th you can find Bruce Cockburn performing a rare FREE show at the Markham Jazz Festival at 9pm, with special guests American sax great Craig Handy, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte and guitarist Michael Occhipinti.
One of Canada’s finest singer-songwriters, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and world beat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders. “My job,” he explains, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.”

A seven-time Juno Award nominee for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, guitarist/composer Michael Occhipinti’s modern and eclectic approach to jazz and creative music of all kinds has earned him a broad array of listeners and the respect of critics and musicians alike.  As a leader of the acclaimed jazz orchestra NOJO, his own quintet, and The Sicilian Project, Michael has established himself as an inventive composer and arranger, and his recording Creation Dream – The Songs of Bruce Cockburn remains a favourite instrumental jazz recording among critics and fans.
