COLD CHISEL ANNOUNCE FIRST LIVE CD/DVD IN OVER A DECADE

Iconic Australian rock band, Cold Chisel, have announced the first new release on their own label: “The Live Tapes Vol. 1: Hordern Pavilion. April 18, 2012”.

This special concert set will feature 21 live recordings and will be available on Friday, November 22. It will be released as a Deluxe 2 CD/1 DVD pack, a double CD, a Blu-Ray and Standard DVD or via digital download.

These will be the first new live Cold Chisel releases in over 10 years. The film and the audio capture the band in full flight as they launched their gold certified studio album, No Plans.

“That handful of smaller gigs we did last year were really special. It’ll be good to have one out there for everyone who wasn’t able to get along to those shows”, says Cold Chisel guitarist, Ian Moss.

This particular show will be long remembered by those who endured the monsoonal thunderstorm which lit up the harbour city as the band electrified the Hordern Pavilion that night. The gig came just a few months after Cold Chisel had wrapped their unforgettable “Light The Nitro” tour. The 36 dates on that run set all sorts of sales records, drawing over 300,000 people across Australasia.

We were really road hardened by the time of that Hordern gig because we’d just finished that big tour a few months prior“, reflects the band’s frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “Adding a few new songs in the set for those launch gigs kept things fresh for us. Listening and watching it back, it’s raw and primal, warts and all – like the best rock & roll should be.”

“The Live Tapes” will be an ongoing series for Cold Chisel over coming years. An exhaustive review of the band’s archives prior to the digital release of their studio albums in 2011 revealed multi-track recordings of several legendary gigs from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Now that the band has its own label imprint, those masters will gradually be restored and mixed for release at irregular intervals.

At this stage it’s not certain how many volumes of “The Live Tapes” will be released but a spokesman for the band said that hopes were high for “at least five new live releases over the next five years“.

“It was important to the band that they kicked this series off with a show that really made a statement. That Hordern gig definitely fits that bill!”

“The Live Tapes Vol. 1: Hordern Pavilion. April 18, 2012” titles will be released on Cold Chisel Music through Universal Music Australia on Friday, November 22, 2013.

ALEX LLOYD ANNOUNCES FIRST AUSTRALIAN TOUR IN FIVE YEARS

One of Australia’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters, the multiple ARIA Award winning Alex Lloyd, has today announced his first tour back in Australia since moving abroad in 2008 which will see Lloyd and his full band playing shows along the East Coast of Australia throughout November/December in support of his new album Urban Wilderness on the Urban Wilderness Tour.

The Urban Wilderness Tour will follow the 18 October release of Lloyd’s long awaited new album, Urban Wilderness. Featuring songs of family and romance with tracks written across the globe, Urban Wilderness will be released five years on from his last solo effort, 2008’s Good In The Face Of A Stranger. Urban Wilderness is 12 tracks of pure, pop-tinged song craft on which Lloyd is ably assisted by fellow artists Shane Nicholson and Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil).

Alex said today “It’s been so long since I’ve toured Australia with a full band. I’m really looking forward to playing some tracks from my new album Urban Wilderness and of course some of the old favourites

Special guests on the tour are Central Coast ‘dream-folk’ duo The Young Lions. Formed back in 2011, they played just two sold out Sydney shows before one half of the band set off to travel the world.  Two years and many continents later the boys have made their way back home and will be releasing their debut album in 2014.

Review: Man of Steel (2013)

I have always tended to consider the Superman series of movies light entertainment more than ea_manofsteel_posterany type of serious science fiction film. The older movies with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had their particular kind of charm, Superman Returns (or “Superman the Stalker”) however was just way too creepy!

What we have here with the Man of Steel is a serious exploration of the Science Fiction aspects of the entire story. Sure the man of Steel is in their faster than a speeding bullet etc. but he is painted very much as an alien learning to cope with his newly adopted planet.

Drawing on the second Superman film (well it was actually the first if you accept the Director’s cut of Superman I) we see the character of General Zod forming an integral part of the story complete with space ships and futuristic equipment and battles.

Super hero purists will probably hate this film, but for those of us who were not very interested in Super heroes in the first place this is a very interesting Science Fiction film with a stellar cast including Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Russell Crowe.

AMBER LAWRENCE & JASON OWEN ISLANDS IN THE STREAM EXTENDED NEW DATES ADDED FOR 2014 – DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND

After the success of the Islands in the Stream 2013 tour dates, award-winning country artist Amber Lawrence and label-mate, X-Factor 2012 runner-up, Jason Owen are extending the tour through to 2014. With most of the shows selling out and their duet single – of the same name – climbing up the charts, the two talented performers have already started adding 2014 dates to the tour. The tour, which kicked off in June 2013 and was to initially finish at the end of November, is now being extended into April 2014 and beyond.

Amber and Jason’s youthful interpretation of the Islands in the Stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton is the perfect inspiration behind their joint national tour.  It also marked the release of Jason’s debut album Life Is A Highway which debuted at #5 on the ARIA Album chart and #1 on the i-Tunes Country Chart first week out.

It’s both their love of country music and the audiences that have brought them together while both coming from different “islands in the stream”.  Amber hails from Sydney and Jason grew up in small town of 12 called Albert in regional NSW. This two-hour show will feature Jason and Amber performing with their touring band, their own hits and songs as well as special duets throughout the show.

Amber is known as one of the hardest working artists in the industry and it has certainly been paying off with 13 single releases all of which have been Top 5 radio favourites including seven #1’s.  She has more than 10 awards to her name including the Tamworth Telstra Horizon Award at the 2011 Golden Guitars and was nominated in the Female Artist of the Year category at this year’s Golden Guitars.  Amber will perform some of her fan favourites such as Wrecking Ball, Good Girls, Don’t Do Lonely Well, Women Like Me and from her latest album “3”, Everybody’s A Mess, Man Across the Street and Try.  Throughout the tour Amber will continue to promote her 3rd album which saw her fourth single Pretty Little Liar released in August.

At 19 years of age, Life Is A Highway marks the start of a new journey for Jason, who has moved from his small country town to Sydney and is now ready to embrace a full-time career as a recording and performing artist.  Life Is A Highway features songs such as Always On My Mind, Against The Wind, If Tomorrow Never Comes, and Sweet Home Alabama to name a few.  The album’s collection of songs – which are eclectic in genre – are all connected by the beauty of Jason’s unique voice, and fans will now be able to experience it live.

Yolanda Be Cool present ‘To Be Alone’

Yolanda Be Cool, in conjunction with Sweat It Out! and NYC legends, Nurvous Records, are proud to present ‘To Be Alone’.

Plucked from the acclaimed ‘Ladies and Mentalmen’ LP, this track is the slow burner amidst the dancefloor onslaught. ‘To Be Alone’ oozes class through the shining vocals by the legendary Omar + a very special secret friend.

With remixes coming from Urulu, James Curd, Critical Mess (AKA Audiofly), and a refix from the YBC boys themselves, you haven’t heard the last of ‘To Be Alone’.

Yolanda Be Cool have had a world wide number one, yes, but they also have a growing list of beatport hits, made for the club. They are as comfortable in Morocco, as a guest of the king, performing before 90,000 people, as they are in a Berlin basement performing for 90.

For them, in music and in life, it’s the differences that make the difference, whether it be a 1950’s Italian folk song, juxtaposed with a fruity techno beat (go on, you know the one), or dinner in Monaco one day, Berghain the next, Johnson and Sylvester have had a pretty good couple of years touring the world and based on early feedback on this one, look set to continue filling their passports.

Review: The Mortal Instruments City of Bones (2013)

MORTAL-INSTRUMENTS-GUIDE_612x380

Yaaawwnnn!

I must admit to yawning quite a bit through this Underworld copycat film complete with demons, vampires, werewolves…you know the standard sort of fare.

Its not that it was exactly a bad film, it had some interesting moments, just that I’ve kind of seen it all before. Apparently an original book by Cassandra Clare (yes very original) the first book of The Mortal Instruments series. I guess this means there will be some harry-potter-esque sequels in the wings (Actually having brought Harry into the mix, this is probably the thing I most disliked about about the film, all its silly spells and quests; but then I didn’t much like the Lord of the Rings either).

Sex appeal-wise Lily Colins (and indeed Lena Headey) were no comparison to Kate Beckinsale in a tight-fitting cat suit leaping about killing vampires. It was not frightening in the least; perhaps the most “creepy” aspect of the film would be that we find out (spoiler alert..look away) the young couple falling in love and kissing in the garden are actually brother and sister! (..well I suppose everyone knows this from the book anyway..)

Review: Redacted (2007)

A very interesting Iraqi war piece from director Brian De Palma (Dressed To Kill, Casualties ofredacted_ver5 War, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, Mission to Mars etc.) loosely based on the 2006 Mahmudiyah killings in Mahmoudiyah, Iraq, when US Soldiers raped an Iraqi girl and murdered her along with her family.

The film goes to great lengths at its beginning to point out that it is fictitious and that De Palma is not saying this actually happened, just sorta. After all the US Army didn’t prosecute anyone so therefore, it only sorta happened…!

The film uses the now familiar handheld camera perspective with the lead character relating a video diary to his camera.

I didn’t notice that Brian De Palma had directed the film until the closing credits, so didn’t immediately make the connection with Casualties of War. Redacted was a far superior film: it was everything Casualties of War was not (Michael J. Fox frowning his way through two hours or so). The film asked a lot of the questions Western society is asking of just how American troops are acting in these theatres of war and the pressures that drive some of them to atrocities such as this.

Review: Cruising (1980)

Since just seeing this film recently I can’t stop raving about it to people. On the surfaceCruising 1980 Al Pacino pic 3 Cruising is a film about a Psychopath murdering homosexuals in the gay scene. Al Pacino plays a heterosexual cop (lots of bedroom scenes with Karen Allen to confirm this!) assigned to go undercover and find the killer.

This film pulls very few punches when it comes to depicting gay bars and the shenanigans that consenting male adults get up to in said bars, so if your a bit squeamish about being exposed to the gay leather S & M scene, maybe give the film a miss. However if you want to see an absolutely brilliant film by William Friedkin (also Director of The Exorcist and The French Connection) and can deal with sometimes confronting imagery give it a go.

I will not spoil the ending for you, but the realisation at the end of the film will you leave you thinking and wondering for days.

Review: Dogging – A Love Story (2009)

This is a very funny British film about a young man who is trying to become a journalist byDogging-A-Love-Story-001 writing an in-depth article about the practice of dogging (or having sex in cars in public while other perverts watch..to the more sheltered reader!).

Whilst the description sounds like a bit of a what-the-window-cleaner-saw-smut-fest, the actual Dogging is kept to a minimum on screen with more concentration on the comedy such a lifestyle is apt to produce.

Certainly not one for the not-broad-minded but very, very funny if you are. The end result is a sweet love story and people who realize they don’t need quite such a lifestyle to care about one another.

Review: Blood (2012)

Blood is a very well made British film with a police story involving many twists and turns.blood-movie-poster With the worldwide success of television programs like The Sweeney and The Bill, the UK has something of a reputation for turning out high quality police drama without quite the sordidness of the American variety.

In Blood two policemen decide to take the law into their own hands after a 12 year old girl is found murdered. Whats unfolds is a very telling tale asking questions about mob justice in the face of anger.
