Review: Parkland (2013)

Parkland was an interesting take on the whole JFK assassination. Not a who dunnit or a Parkland3conspiracy theory flick as you would think, but a film that deals with the impact the shooting had on the people around the events.

The film pretty much says that Lee Harvey Oswald was the only shooter (sorry conspiracy folks) and looks at the medical staff that tried to revive Kennedy, the Secret service that cared for his body and the families of the central characters. Most of the characters are left with their own personal mark by the event and its aftermath.

What could have been a shameless sobfest for American filmgoers is actually a very sensitive piece that even looks at the impact on the Oswald family after the assassination. Note quite the “important” film I think its director would like it to be, but nevertheless an interesting piece of history.

Review: Elysium (2013)

elysium
Damon all tech’ed up to even the score..

A rather interesting piece of Science Fiction, rather timely in terms of the current political feud in America over Obama-care.

Director Neill Blomkamp (with the help of Matt Damon and Jodie Foster) paint a picture of a bleak future where hi-tech medicine is only available to the very wealthy who live on a space station orbiting the earth. The earth itself is a complete dump (looks rather like Mexico not surprisingly) with mass overpopulation and problems galore. The space station Elysium is a paradise of nice tidy houses and beautiful people.

I found some interesting parallels in this film to Sleep Dealer, with a working underclass that supports a smaller wealthy one. Of course the obvious comparison is Metropolis, but then how can a film be bad if it is anything like Metropolis! I won’t spoil it for you anymore, definitely worth a look.

Review: The Mechanic (2011)

Jason Statham stars in this remake of the classic Charles Bronson film. To be honest I was The-Mechanic-Movie-Trailer-Official-HDexpecting beforehand to completely hate this purely because it was a remake of something so good, I was delightfully surprised…

This remake pretty much followed the original with a bit of modernizing and extra twists and turns dropped in for better affect. In a lot of ways it was a standard Statham action fare, but if I am being completely fair he did do the original work justice.

As I like to do with a lot of remakes, you just really have to ignore the fact that this is a film based on another film and look at it as a separate work. Whilst you can then still see glaring similarities, you will also enjoy the extra interpretation the new director adds.

In some ways this approach worked for The Mechanic, but you could also not get away from the fact that Statham captured brilliantly the broodiness and detachment of the Bronson character in the original. Frankly it is hard to ask the question “was it as good as the original” as the new version of The Mechanic is such a good film in its own right.

Review: Red Heat (1988)

A bit of a classic film from the hey day of Governor Schwarzenegger, when grunting and Red-Heat-featured-imageflexing his biceps pretty much got him through every scene.  That’s not to say that Arnie did not make slightly better films after this as his range improved, but Red Heat was still firmly steeped in the days of grunting!

Arnie plays a hard-nosed Russian cop sent out to America to intercept a Russian gangster. Jim Belushi wise-cracks his way through an hour and a bit with reference after reference to masturbation (well that seemed to be what most of his lines were about) and does a fairly good job as his local cop babysitter. Laurence ‘Larry’ Fishburne looking very thin and young plays a somewhat straight fellow cop who tut’s and huffs about Belushi throughout.

Not much here in the way of story or character development, but it stands up quite well against similar films of the ilk coming out in recent years. Call it a guilty pleasure.

COLD CHISEL ANNOUNCE FIRST LIVE CD/DVD IN OVER A DECADE

Iconic Australian rock band, Cold Chisel, have announced the first new release on their own label: “The Live Tapes Vol. 1: Hordern Pavilion. April 18, 2012”.

This special concert set will feature 21 live recordings and will be available on Friday, November 22. It will be released as a Deluxe 2 CD/1 DVD pack, a double CD, a Blu-Ray and Standard DVD or via digital download.

These will be the first new live Cold Chisel releases in over 10 years. The film and the audio capture the band in full flight as they launched their gold certified studio album, No Plans.

“That handful of smaller gigs we did last year were really special. It’ll be good to have one out there for everyone who wasn’t able to get along to those shows”, says Cold Chisel guitarist, Ian Moss.

This particular show will be long remembered by those who endured the monsoonal thunderstorm which lit up the harbour city as the band electrified the Hordern Pavilion that night. The gig came just a few months after Cold Chisel had wrapped their unforgettable “Light The Nitro” tour. The 36 dates on that run set all sorts of sales records, drawing over 300,000 people across Australasia.

We were really road hardened by the time of that Hordern gig because we’d just finished that big tour a few months prior“, reflects the band’s frontman, Jimmy Barnes. “Adding a few new songs in the set for those launch gigs kept things fresh for us. Listening and watching it back, it’s raw and primal, warts and all – like the best rock & roll should be.”

“The Live Tapes” will be an ongoing series for Cold Chisel over coming years. An exhaustive review of the band’s archives prior to the digital release of their studio albums in 2011 revealed multi-track recordings of several legendary gigs from the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Now that the band has its own label imprint, those masters will gradually be restored and mixed for release at irregular intervals.

At this stage it’s not certain how many volumes of “The Live Tapes” will be released but a spokesman for the band said that hopes were high for “at least five new live releases over the next five years“.

“It was important to the band that they kicked this series off with a show that really made a statement. That Hordern gig definitely fits that bill!”

“The Live Tapes Vol. 1: Hordern Pavilion. April 18, 2012” titles will be released on Cold Chisel Music through Universal Music Australia on Friday, November 22, 2013.

ALEX LLOYD ANNOUNCES FIRST AUSTRALIAN TOUR IN FIVE YEARS

One of Australia’s most acclaimed singer-songwriters, the multiple ARIA Award winning Alex Lloyd, has today announced his first tour back in Australia since moving abroad in 2008 which will see Lloyd and his full band playing shows along the East Coast of Australia throughout November/December in support of his new album Urban Wilderness on the Urban Wilderness Tour.

The Urban Wilderness Tour will follow the 18 October release of Lloyd’s long awaited new album, Urban Wilderness. Featuring songs of family and romance with tracks written across the globe, Urban Wilderness will be released five years on from his last solo effort, 2008’s Good In The Face Of A Stranger. Urban Wilderness is 12 tracks of pure, pop-tinged song craft on which Lloyd is ably assisted by fellow artists Shane Nicholson and Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil).

Alex said today “It’s been so long since I’ve toured Australia with a full band. I’m really looking forward to playing some tracks from my new album Urban Wilderness and of course some of the old favourites

Special guests on the tour are Central Coast ‘dream-folk’ duo The Young Lions. Formed back in 2011, they played just two sold out Sydney shows before one half of the band set off to travel the world.  Two years and many continents later the boys have made their way back home and will be releasing their debut album in 2014.

Review: Man of Steel (2013)

I have always tended to consider the Superman series of movies light entertainment more than ea_manofsteel_posterany type of serious science fiction film. The older movies with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder had their particular kind of charm, Superman Returns (or “Superman the Stalker”) however was just way too creepy!

What we have here with the Man of Steel is a serious exploration of the Science Fiction aspects of the entire story. Sure the man of Steel is in their faster than a speeding bullet etc. but he is painted very much as an alien learning to cope with his newly adopted planet.

Drawing on the second Superman film (well it was actually the first if you accept the Director’s cut of Superman I) we see the character of General Zod forming an integral part of the story complete with space ships and futuristic equipment and battles.

Super hero purists will probably hate this film, but for those of us who were not very interested in Super heroes in the first place this is a very interesting Science Fiction film with a stellar cast including Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Russell Crowe.
