Learner driver charged after allegedly leading police on pursuit near Gundagai

A Learner driver has been charged after he allegedly lead police in a vehicle pursuit.

About 2.15pm yesterday (Friday 8 July 2016), officers attached to Gundagai Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped an Audi TT Coupe on the Hume Highway, south of Gundagai, in relation to its manner of driving.

After initially stopping, the driver allegedly accelerated away from police. Police initiated a pursuit however terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

A short time later, the vehicle was again detected travelling at high speeds on the Hume Highway, south of Holbrook.

The driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, fled on foot once his vehicle became bogged after he allegedly attempted to evade police.

The 29-year-old man from Victoria was arrested and taken to Albury Police Station where it was determined he was the holder of a Learner licence.

He was charged with a number of traffic offences including:

1. Dangerous driving (Police Pursuit – Skye’s Law),

2. Learner driver not accompanied,

3. Not display “L” signs,

4. Dangerous driving,

5. Exceed speed over 45 kph.

He was refused bail today (Saturday 9 July 2016), and is due to re-appear in Albury Local Court on 11 July 2016.

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, Commander of Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, said it was fortunate a number of truck drivers were in the area at the time of the incident, who greatly assisted police.

“The Traffic and Highway Patrol officers involved in the alleged pursuit were assisted by truck drivers who were travelling in the area at the time of the incident.

“We would like to thank those drivers, who not only provided valuable information to officers on the location of the Audi, but who also assisted in the safety of their fellow road users,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said.

Man charged after drugs and weapon seized – Armidale

A man has been charged after police seized drugs and a prohibited weapon at a caravan park in Armidale last week.

About 10.50pm on Friday (8 July 2016), following investigations, officers from Armidale Target Action Group attended a caravan park in Armidale.

At the caravan park officers searched a car and a home, seizing drugs believed to be ‘ice’ and a throwing star.

The seized items will undergo forensic examinations.

A 37-year-old man was arrested and taken to Armidale Police Station where he was charged with breach weapons prohibition order, posses prohibited weapon, supply prohibited drug and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Armidale Local Court today (Monday 11 July 2016).

Disqualified driver caught three times in three hours – Goulburn

A man will appear in court today after allegedly being caught driving whilst disqualified three times in three hours in the state’s south-west.

About 6.35pm yesterday (Saturday 10 July 2016), police from the Gundagai Highway Patrol were conducting speed checks along the Hume Highway at Mundarlo, 35 km west of Gundagai.

Police allegedly detected a silver Mitsubishi sedan travelling northbound at a speed of 168km/h in a 110 km/h zone.

They stopped the car and issued the driver, a 21-year-old man from Victoria, with a Field Court Attendance Notice for exceed speed limit over 45km/h, drive whilst disqualified, and drive unregistered vehicle and to appear at Tumut Local Court on Wednesday 14 September 2016.

About 7.25pm, police allegedly sighted the same Mitsubishi sedan on Mount Street, Gundagai. They stopped the car and the man was issued with a second Field Court Attendance Notice for drive whilst disqualified, and drive unregistered vehicle and to appear at Tumut Local Court on Wednesday 14 September 2016.

About 9.30pm, police from the Hume Highway Patrol allegedly sighted the same Mitsubishi sedan travelling northbound on the Hume Highway, Goulburn at a speed of 132 km/h in a 110km/h zone.

The vehicle was stopped and the man arrested.

He was taken to Goulburn Police Station and charged with exceed speed limit over 10 km/h, drive whilst disqualified, and drive unregistered vehicle.

The man was refused bail and will appear at Goulburn Local Court today (Monday 11 July 2016).

House fire – Cessnock

A man remains in hospital following a house fire in Cessnock this morning.
About 7.30am today (Sunday 10 July 2016), emergency services were called to Kanowna Avenue, Cessnock, where they found a house well-alight.

NSW Fire & Rescue officers attended and extinguished the fire; however, the home was completely destroyed.

A 34-year-old man was in the home at the time of the incident.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics attended and treated him before he was taken to Cessnock Hospital, prior to being flown to the Royal North Shore Hospital.

The man was placed in intensive care, and remains in a serious, but stable, condition.
Officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command established a crime scene and commenced investigating the incident.

The fire is believed to have started with a heater and is not being treated as suspicious.

Woman charged over alleged assault of 84-year-old woman – Newcastle

A woman has been charged following the alleged assault of an 84-year-old woman in Newcastle last week.

About 2.30pm on Friday (8 July 2016), an 84-year-old woman was walking on Hunter Street, Newcastle, where it is alleged that a 50-year-old woman struck the older woman’s shoulder causing her to fall heavily to the ground hitting her head on the pavement.

The injured woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics, before being taken to John Hunter Hospital for treatment for a fractured hip. She is currently in a stable condition.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command attended and commenced investigations.

About 11am yesterday (Saturday 9 July 2016), officers attached to Newcastle City Local Area Command arrested a 50-year-old woman, and took her to Newcastle City Police Station where she was charged with reckless wounding cause grievous bodily harm.

The woman was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Sunday 10 July 2016).
