Beveridge Primary School in lockdown after reports of a gunman

Parents have been allowed to pick up their children from a Melbourne school after a lockdown was lifted following reports of a gunman.

Beveridge Primary School was put in lockdown after a gunman was reportedly spotted near the grounds of the school on the northern fringe of Melbourne, Victoria.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said that the lockdown had now been lifted after police responded to reports of a man with a firearm near the school.

The police contained the area and performed a search for the man.

“The school activated its emergency management plan as a precautionary measure,” she said.

“No threat has been made and no injuries reported.”

Earlier parents were told not to get out of their cars to pick up their children.

Four students claimed to have been threatened by a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Streets around the scene were cordoned off.

Missing person appeal – Armidale

Police hold grave fears for a woman reported missing from the Armidale area.
Jeanette Bell, 63, from Invergowrie, was last seen in Armidale about 9am yesterday (Thursday 17 March 2016).

At the time, she was seen driving her blue/grey coloured 1991 Ford Falcon sedan, registration AL13TQ (NSW).

Police have cause to have grave concerns for her welfare.

Anyone who sights Jeanette Bell or her motor vehicle, or has any information on her whereabouts is asked to contact police immediately.

Fatal crash – Warral, near Tamworth

A report will be prepared for the Coroner after a fatal crash south of Tamworth yesterday.

About 7.30am (Thursday 17 March 2016), a Nissan X-trail was travelling north on Werris Creek Road, south of Tamworth, when it collided with a southbound semi-trailer.

The 37-year-old driver of the X-trail died at the scene. His two male passengers, both aged 17, were treated at the scene for shock before being taken to Tamworth Hospital.

The driver of the semi-trailer, a 68-year-old man, was uninjured and was taken to Tamworth Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police from Oxley Local Area Command and Northern Tablelands Crash Investigation Unit attended and conducted inquiries.

Werris Creek Road was closed for about six hours, with diversions put in place.

Two charged with drug and fraud offences – Lake Macquarie

Lake Macquarie police have arrested and charged two men with drug and fraud offences following an investigation.

On 8 March 2016 a number of credit cards were stolen from vehicles in the Floraville area.

Numerous transactions were made with the stolen credit cards at varies locations across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie and an investigation commenced by Lake Macquarie Property Crime Unit.

About 10.30am yesterday (Wednesday 16 March 2016) police arrested two men in the vicinity of Perkins Street and taken to Newcastle Police Station.

Police also allegedly seized a number of credit cards and an amount of drugs.

The 29-year-old man was charged with five counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception and two counts of possess prohibited drug.

The 27-year-old man was charged with six counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception.

Both men were refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court today (Thursday 17 March 2016).

Man charged over alleged shooting – Armidale

A man will face court today over the alleged shooting of a man in the state’s Northern Tablelands.

Yesterday morning (Wednesday 16 March 2016), a 23-year-old man attended Armidale Hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to his leg.

He’s since been transferred to John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Officers attached to New England Local Area Command were alerted and launched an investigation into the incident.

After initial inquiries, police attended a home in Cookes Road, Armidale, about 4am.

They established a crime scene at the home, which was examined by detectives and forensic specialists.

Following further investigations, a 23-year-old man was arrested at Armidale Police Station about 7.30pm, and charged with fire firearm in a manner likely to injure person, and recklessly cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Armidale Local Court today (Thursday 17 March 2016).
