Hume Highway closed after toxic rubbish pile set ablaze by lightning in Melbourne

The owners of a waste management company in Melbourne are under investigation over a massive rubbish fire that continues to burn in the northern suburbs.

Residents have been warned to stay away from the potentially toxic blaze which caused the Hume Highway to be shut in both directions.

It is believed lightning sparked the fire at the rubbish pile behind a factory in Somerton at about 2.30am today.

Around 150 firefighters and aerial bombing crews are battling the blaze which continues to burn this evening.

As fire crews battled the blaze throughout today, fears of toxic smoke and asbestos grew.

Residents in surrounding suburbs are still advised to stay indoors, close windows and shut off air conditioning.

The specialist recycling plant next door has been spared, however workers are furious.

The stockpile is attached to a business named Ecotec Woodwaste, which made money from operating as a private dumping ground.

The former owner has recently been prosecuted for failing to comply with planning permits and council orders to clean up the site.

On Monday a court fined him $59,000 plus costs, while another employee will front a magistrate next week.

Spot fires have flared on the site before, with CFA officers deeming it an ongoing risk.

Firefighters are expected to battle this enormous blaze for days and will remain on scene to ensure it does not spread.

Twelve injured when bus rolls south of Goulburn

Both lanes of the Hume Highway near Goulburn were closed on Friday afternoon as firefighters worked to extinguish a grass fire that is now under control.

While motorists could travel south to Canberra, all northbound highway traffic was being diverted through Goulburn. The highway was reopened by authorities about 6.30pm.

More than six fire crews were called to contain the fire close to the south Goulburn McDonald’s restaurant, which began on the median strip after a car lost its wheel around 1.30pm Friday.

Hot winds propelled the blaze to jump to the other side of the highway. The fire was moving rapidly eastbound, advancing towards several properties.

Residents have said they understood the fire started when a trailer travelling on the Hume Hwy became unhinged and spilled its load on the median strip.

Some residents also hosed down their properties to prevent the fire from catching.

The fire is understood to have knocked out power in some areas around the blaze.

Traffic was being diverted through Goulburn and motorists have been asked to avoid the area. Main roads through the town were congested for several hours as the Hume Highway remained closed.

The NSW Rural Fire Service elevated the alert level to watch and act, before dropping it to alert around 4.45pm. The fire is believed the fire has burnt out five hectares.

South Hill property owner Roland Gumbert said there were fires to the left and right of his place on Garrorigang Road but as far as he could see, the blaze was under control.

“We don’t have any damage to our place, except for perhaps fences,” he told the Goulburn Post.

“I can see some stumps burning [not on his property] but all our buildings and equipment are fine.”

NSW Southern Tableands RFS zone manager Ian Kennerley said 70 personnel and 20 appliances were onsite and that the fire had jumped the highway and moved over to South Hill. It was heading towards the river and the railway line.

Mr Kennerley was confident crews were getting on top of the fire and was hoping for a drop in the wind.

NSW Fire and Rescue were waterbombing South Hill near the homestead where several tankers were onsite to battle the flames. They were also waterbombing the northern side of the highway as trees were alight.

Earlier on Friday, the Emergency Services Agency warned Canberrans to prepare for a high fire risk amid potentially damaging winds.

Just before 1.50pm (Saturday 21 November 2015), emergency services were called to Goulburn Airport, Windellama Road, following reports of two injured skydivers.

Initial inquiries have led police to believe the pair was tandem skydiving, when about 20m from ground, they fell to the ground.

Shortly before 11pm yesterday (Wednesday 18 November 2015), a man entered the pizza store on Steel Street and asked to purchase a dink.

As one of the two employees turned to serve him the man produced a shortened firearm, threatened the two male employees and demanded cash.

At the time of the robbery the man was wearing a red and white baseball cap, navy t-shirt, grey shorts and no shoes.

The man had a green ‘enviro’ bag in which the firearm was secreted and covered it with a red shirt.

Catherine Britt earns 6 CMAA Nominations for ‘Boneshaker’, creates ARIA history

The 44th Country Music Association of Australia Awards nominees were announced yesterday with Catherine Britt featuring prominently. The ceremony took place at the iconic Sydney Opera House and featured an all-star line-up of Australian talent but no star shone brighter than the Newcastle singer-songwriter who earned nominations in 6 categories including the prestigious Album of the Year for her critically acclaimed release ‘Boneshaker’

In addition to Album of the Year, Catherine is nominated for Female Artist of The Year, Single of The Year (‘Boneshaker’), Video of The Year (along with directors Tribal Apes), APRA AMCOS Song Of The Year and Vocal Collaboration Of The Year for ‘You and Me Against The World’, a duet with legendary songsmith Steve Earle.

“I didn’t expect much going into the Golden Guitar nominations event having had such a tough year and not being able to give this album all of the attention it deserved,” says Catherine. “‘Boneshaker’ could have easily flown under the radar but today really was a wonderful surprise. I was just so taken aback by the support and love from my peers and my wonderful industry that I am so proud to be a part of. Thank you Golden Guitars and thank you to all who voted for my album ‘Boneshaker’, I’m humbled and excited for 2016.”

The CMAA announcement comes 6 weeks after ‘Boneshaker’ was revealed as a contender for Best Country Album at this year’s ARIA Awards. This is the sixth time Catherine has received a nomination in this category and the first time in ARIA history an artist has received a Best Country Album nomination for each of their first 6 album releases.

Released May 1 on Lost Highway (Universal Music) ‘Boneshaker’ is Catherine’s debut release for the prestigious label and continues to receive praise from fans and media alike. Chris Familton (The Music) stated it “stands head and shoulders above much of the soulless country music purporting to represent the genre” while Rhythms proclaimed: “Wow! The title track to Catherine Britt’s new album erupts like a massive Pat Benatar anthem, with layers of production never previously encountered on any of Britt’s releases. It’s gigantic.”

As reported in the media, 2015 has been a tough year for Catherine: weeks after releasing her album ‘Boneshaker’ she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Promotional activities for the album may have been curtailed due to her ongoing treatment but Catherine’s desire to share publicly share her journey has served as an inspiration to many. She continues to win fans on and off stage for her amazing musical talents, perseverance and irrefutable bravery.

Described by media as “one of the most compelling, and interesting, artists at work in Australian music, let alone within country music” Catherine Britt has worked with the likes of Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Sir Elton John, Don McLean, Chris Isaak, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Guy Clark and Keith Urban to name but a few.

The Old Hume Highway brought to life

A vision where travellers make their way along the Old Hume Highway with a map in hand and a new song playing is becoming a reality.

VicRoads has come on board to help add the highway between Wodonga and Melbourne to a book titled The Old Hume Highway, History Starts with the Road.

The publication was release in 2013 but only covered the road between Sydney and Albury.

Even the smallest thing uncovered could make the biggest difference.- Frank Burke

Non-profit charity group Old Hume Highway 31 negotiated the book’s revision with VicRoads and the RMS.

VicRoads North Eastern Region director Bryan Sherritt said the body would provide $25,000 for the project.

“The Old Hume Highway 31 project has the potential to boost tourism and economic turnover in the communities that have been bypassed by the Hume Freeway,” he said.

“The promotion of these communities will encourage motorists to take more breaks, grab some food or a coffee, and see what the highway towns have to offer.”

The charity organisation, headed by Frank Burke, has been pushing for the road to become a travel path similar to Route 66 in America.

Since initial discussions last July, a CD with a song titled We’re Going Everywhere has produced by the makers of the well-known track I’ve Been Everywhere.

The song includes the names of 86 towns along the highway.

Now, Mr Burke is putting a call out for historic photos, artefacts and documents to be included in the book.

“We have contacted every historical society between Melbourne and Wodonga asking for input,” he said.

“The highway is the road around which Australia was built and it’s the things we don’t know which we are hoping to find.

“Even the smallest thing uncovered could make the biggest difference.”

The long-term aim is to get cars back on the old highway rather than bypassing regional towns on the freeway.

The Wodonga Historical Society is sifting through old photos for the book.

Society secretary treasurer Uta Wiltshire said hopefully members of the public will also have stories to tell about the travel route.

“The book is great for people who are interested in history and have the time to get off the freeway,” she said.

“One of the greatest stories is the 90 degree bend at the corner of High Street and Elgin Boulevard.

“That was the highway and trucks had to do the turn.”
