Fatal crash – Tamworth

Police are investigating following a single vehicle crash south of Tamworth today.

About 3pm (Tuesday 19 July 2016), police and emergency services were called to a crash on the New England Highway, about 25km south of Tamworth.

Initial investigations suggest a Peugeot with four occupants in the vehicle, rolled leaving them trapped for a short time.

A 73-year-old male front seat passenger died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.

Three other people in the car, the 64-year-old male driver and two 64-year-old female rear seat passengers were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics.

One female passenger was airlifted by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with serious injuries.

The driver and other female passenger were taken by Ambulance to Tamworth Base Hospital with minor injuries.

A crime scene was established with Crash Investigation Unit officers in attendance.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Critical incident – Maitland

A critical incident has been launched after a woman died while in custody at Maitland Police Station.

About 12.45am (Monday 18 July 2016), police located and detained a 36-year-old woman who appeared intoxicated, walking along Wollumbi Road, Cessnock.

The woman was transported by police to Maitland Police Station and placed in a holding cell.

About 6am the woman was found deceased.

A Critical Incident Team from Newcastle will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.

All information will be provided to the Coroner who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the woman’s death.

The welfare of the police officers has been addressed and they are being supported.

The woman’s family has been notified and our thoughts and condolences go out to the family.

Critical incident – Newcastle

A critical incident has been launched after a man fell from an elevated driveway at a hospital in Newcastle last night.

About 11.30pm (Monday 18 July 2016), police escorted a 30-year-old man to Mater Hospital, Newcastle, to seek medical assistance.

While at the hospital it is alleged the man ran through an open security door. He was seen to jump over a railing and landed on the concrete below, sustaining head and internal injuries.

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital and remains in a critical condition.

A Critical Incident Team from Lake Macquarie will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.

That investigation will be subject to independent review.
