{"id":2646,"date":"2015-08-13T03:39:20","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T17:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.australianbroadcastingmedia.com.au\/publishing\/?p=2646"},"modified":"2015-08-13T03:39:20","modified_gmt":"2015-08-12T17:39:20","slug":"police-radio-transmissions-to-be-encrypted-in-northern-region","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.onradio.com.au\/index.php\/2015\/08\/13\/police-radio-transmissions-to-be-encrypted-in-northern-region\/","title":{"rendered":"Police radio transmissions to be encrypted in Northern Region"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><\/b>Police radio transmissions will soon be encrypted in parts of the state\u2019s north under new arrangements aimed at improving officer safety in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The encryption process, which is expected to go-live mid-September, will affect digital radio across Central Hunter, Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and Manning Great Lakes Local Area Commands.<\/p>\n<p>This follows the successful encryption of police digital radios across all commands in the Sydney metropolitan region, Newcastle and Wollongong seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Jeff Loy, said the strategy represents an important step forward in ensuring the safety of police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminals will no longer be able to listen in on police radio transmissions to track emergency responses, which means we\u2019re eliminating a significant risk to officer safety,\u201d Assistant Commissioner Loy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolicing can be a highly challenging and dangerous job and we\u2019ll continue to develop and implement strategies that make their role as safe as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEncrypting radio transmissions not only means protecting our officers but also helping them solve and prevent crime,\u201d Assistant Commissioner Loy said.<\/p>\n<p>The change will also affect local media organisations as they\u2019ll no longer have access to monitor police radio via scanners in newsrooms and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to assist media in the vital role they play in communicating information to the public that helps tackle crime,\u201d Assistant Commissioner Loy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo maintain this connection, we\u2019ve developed the Police External Agencies Transfer System (PEATS), an internet feed that\u2019s proved effective for a number of years in providing information on police activity, in place of radio transmissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, we\u2019ll work with affected media organisations to ensure the new measures allow opportunities to attend operations of public significance,\u201d Assistant Commissioner Loy said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police radio transmissions will soon be encrypted in parts of the state\u2019s north under new arrangements aimed at improving officer safety in the region.
