Pirelli More than just..um cough<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I watched an SBS show about the \u00a0Pirelli Calendar the other night and apart from the
\nobvious oggling and \u201clets make one of these for Radio Sydney\u201d it was fascinating how
\nsomething originally put out cheaply for car mechanics\u2019 grease-pit walls became this
\namazing arty farty thing with women represented photographically as works of art. You
\nwould think with the target market in mind that it would never have progressed beyond
\nthe standard \u2018T and \u2018A \u00a0(as they say..if you don\u2019t know what that means your too young
\nto know..) and there’s still plenty of that –\u00a0but very tastefully done.<\/p>\n

In fact most of it will pass the\u00a0Google safe search Moderate\u00a0bar and is really very good.
\nBeing a bit of a purist where art is concerned (lets face it if you read too heavily into
\nthings you could make a fairly convincing argument that the collected works of Hugh
\nHefner are art too) it surprised me that I found a lot of it very good. Well composed and
\nvery thought provoking. Once you get past the immediate hormonal reaction of seeing
\nthe world\u2019s most beautiful women strutting about ex-clothes and get to the \u201coh another
\nnaked woman\u201d stage you begin to see \u00a0a lot more.<\/p>\n

I would guess a lot of feminists would tend to disagree with me as the calendar revolves
\nvery much around Woman as object, not even really just the Woman herself as an
\nobject, but often less than a human; composed into a landscape or structure like \u00a0a
\nbuilding beam or sea shell. Of course Pirelli\u2019s marketing department argue that the
\ncalendar is all about the various ways Women can be beautiful and that Beauty is
\nsomewhat dependant on other relationships.<\/p>\n

Like all bodies of art of course you had the \u201cshock artists\u201d who really said nothing
\nfrom their work other than \u201clook at me I am so different to everyone\u201d; I suppose really
\nsaying \u201cI am an emotional vacuum with no life experience\u201d without exactly meaning
\ntoo. I think in incestuous art cliques they call that \u201ctesting the boundaries\u201d or
\nsomething…<\/p>\n

I noted with amusement that Pirelli did actually appear to put its foot down one year
\nand demand that tires actually be shown with the models as they bankroll the calendar
\nto the tune of millions. Apparently tires have always been in there, just usually so
\nobscurely that it takes a forensic scientist with a magnifying glass to find them in the
\nwild and amazing pictorials. As I am not much of a car nut, unless they had told me I
\nwould not have known Berelli or Pirelli even made tires! Not based on the calendar
\nstills I saw anyway. Maybe they make rubbish tires, who knows (maybe they make you
\ngo just that bit faster), but I do know they make amazing calendars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
