Under Richard Tognetti’s direction, the ACO’s Beethoven 9 concerts won Limelight’s Best Orchestral Concert in 2012 and in June the Australian Chamber Orchestra tackle the biggest symphonic configuration in their history and two ACO premieres in one concert, with Mahler 4 & Sibelius 6.<\/p>\n
Tognetti explores how astounding and diverse the symphonic experience can be, pairing the shortest and sweetest of all Mahler’s symphonies, the ‘Heavenly’ Symphony No.4, with Sibelius’ serenely beautiful 6th Symphony, which the composer said always reminded him ‘of the scent of the first snow.’<\/p>\n

In July, ACO Principal Violin Satu V\u00e4nsk\u00e4 performs firecracker showpiece Subito on the ACO’s Stradivarius violin, launching into a chamber music concert of Slavic melancholy and joy – Piano Quintets.<\/p>\n
Written just prior to the Nazi invasion of the USSR, Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet is a dramatic and harrowing premonition of the coming terror.<\/p>\n
Melting away the turbulence of Shostakovich is the bright, melodious joy of Dvo\u0159\u00e1k’s piano quintet, one of the greatest pieces of chamber music in the canon, performed by Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen, internationally regarded for performances of “immense power and an extraordinary range of colours” (New York Times).<\/p>\n
