Man killed, another injured after being struck by train – East Maitland

A report is being prepared for the Coroner after a man was killed and another was injured when they were hit by a train in the Hunter region on Friday night.

About 10.15pm on Friday (5 February 2016) a 21-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were on the railway tracks about 300 metres east of East Maitland Railway Station when they were struck by a passenger train.

The 21-year-old man died at the scene. The younger man was taken to Maitland Hospital with bruising and abrasions and is in a stable condition.

Police from Central Hunter Local Area Command and Police Transport Command attended and conducted inquiries.

The train line was closed until 3.25am whilst investigations took place.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.

Fatal crash – Ardlethan

A report will be prepared for the Coroner following a fatal crash in the Riverina Region yesterday.

About 6pm (Saturday 6 February 2016), police and emergency services were called to Tallimba-Ardlethan Road, Ardlethan – north-west of Wagga Wagga – following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

On arrival, officers from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command located the 48-year-old male driver deceased in the vehicle.

Initial inquiries indicate the Holden Commodore had been travelling northbound, when the driver lost control on a bend and crashed into a tree.

Police established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Local detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for anyone with information that may assist with their inquiries to contact Crime Stoppers.
